As the Fundraising Lab’s resident librarian and book dragon (yes, I voraciously consume and hoard books in equal measure), I thought I’d pop in to share a few of my recent reads. Whether you're soaking up the sun on your patio, escaping the heat with a chilled drink indoors, or sneaking in a few chapters between Zoom calls (I won’t tell), this summer's book stack is packed with stories that move, challenge, and charm.
From heart-wrenching truths to rom-com giggles and fierce fantasy escapes, here are ten page-turners to consider adding to your Summer TBR (to-be-read):
The Librarian of Burned Books by Brianna Labuskes
If historical fiction is your go-to, this one’s for you. It’s a story of war, censorship, and resilience that feels painfully relevant in today’s world. You’ll find yourself reflecting not just on the past, but on the power of stories to shape our present.
The Townsend Family Recipe Disaster by Shauna Robinson
If your family group chat is a mix of chaos and affection, this one will hit home. It’s warm, funny, and full of heart - like a beloved family recipe, even when things go a little sideways.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
This one shook me. Inspired by David Copperfield, Kingsolver reimagines the story in modern-day Appalachia, and the result is as gutting as it is beautiful. You’ll root for Demon with everything you’ve got.
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez
This is the romantic comedy your summer soul craves. Witty banter? Check. Emotional depth? Check. A love story that makes you believe in second chances and small-town charm? Double check. You'll laugh. You’ll swoon. You might even text your ex (don’t).
Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez
This nonfiction powerhouse shines a light on the gender data gap in everything from healthcare to transportation. If you love a good data-driven argument and a bit of righteous indignation, it’s a must-read - and a conversation starter.
Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole
If you're still recovering from the emotional rollercoaster of Fourth Wing or ACOTAR, here's your next obsession. Spark of the Everflame delivers all the magic, romance, and plot twists your fantasy-loving heart could want. It's fast-paced, immersive, and seriously addictive - perfect for getting completely lost in another world. But heads-up: this is part of a series, and the final book isn’t coming until summer 2026. So yes, you’ll fall in love with the characters… and then join the rest of us in a slow, dramatic wait for the ending. Worth it? Absolutely.
The Women by Kristin Hannah
Kristin Hannah is at it again - breaking our hearts and putting them back together. This emotional tour de force honors the unsung women of the Vietnam War and will leave you seeing history through a sharper, more personal lens. It’s one of those reads that lingers long after you’ve closed the cover.
Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson
Whether you’re a longtime Sanderson fan or new to his worlds, this whimsical fantasy is an absolute delight. Witty, vivid, and surprisingly profound, it’s a joy on the page but even better in your ears. The Graphic Audio version of this audiobook is a full-cast experience you won’t soon forget. A perfect family road-trip companion.
How to Stand Up to a Dictator by Maria Ressa
Maria Ressa’s memoir is a fearless look at what it means to stand up for truth in an era of disinformation and rising authoritarianism. Both deeply personal and globally relevant, this Pulitzer Prize winner’s story is a rallying cry for press freedom and a reminder that defending democracy requires all of us.
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
A group of sharp-witted seniors tackles real-life murder cases between tea breaks and jigsaw puzzles. Charming, clever, and full of warmth, this cozy mystery is perfect for fans of Agatha Christie with a modern twist. Think murder with manners.
So, what’s going in your beach bag or backpack this summer?
Whether you’re craving a laugh, a cry, a thrill, or a little magic, there’s something here for every kind of reader. Let me know what you pick up - or better yet, what I should add to my never-ending TBR pile.
Happy reading - may your TBR be exciting and your iced tea bottomless.
